Gregg Kravitz Kicks Off His Campaign

by: John Morgan

Thu Mar 04, 2010 at 11:33:54 AM EST

Gregg Kravitz held his formal campaign kickoff last evening at the Marathon Grill on Market Street.  Along with his new website (good by the way) he attracted a large group of young, energetic supporters for his event.  He is running against Rep. Babette Josephs Chair of the House State Government Committee.  Babette has been a loyal and staunch advocate for the gay community in Pennsylvania.  This Center City District encompassed downtown Philadelphia and the Gayborhood.  Unfortunately for Gregg we aren't going to abandon our loyalty for Babette because of the work and efforts she has performed for us in Harrisburg.  He's a bright young man with a great future and if he wins the primary all of us will support him but loyalty to one who have always been there for us is paramount.

What else does Babette do? (0.00 / 0)
Long before Gregg decided to run, I've heard complaints from friends in the 8th Ward that Babette's been pretty much of a slouch who is relative unengaged or proactive. They don't complain about her voting record itself, but rather that she's a bump on a log, collecting a paycheck, and doing very little to earn it.

Gregg seems like a doer. We need that.

My chief concern (0.00 / 0)
regarding Babette Josephs' work is LGBT issues.  She always has been our staunchest advocate in Harrisburg on issues which are difficult for some there on which to take strong stands.  If we abandoned her after all she's done for us we send a message to the rest of the legislature that the LGBT community won't remain loyal to you after you've supported them.  That issue trumps everything else for me.

I understand some people have other issues with Babette but these don't override my loyalty to her on the LGBT stands she takes in Harrisburg.  She is always there for us and we have to always be there for her.  That's the way it works.

LGBT is not the only issue (0.00 / 0)
That's great that she has a good record on LGBT.

But, having a legislator working hard on jobs, health care, wages, taxes, infrastructure, environment, budget, etc. also affects LGBT and us S's too (straight).

What good is Babette if she isn't helping LGBT on these basic issues?

Loyalty (0.00 / 0)
It's about loyalty Dave.  You have to be loyal to those who have been loyal to you.  It's that basic.

Loyalty should trump competence (0.00 / 0)
How do you know that Gregg wouldn't be a better advocate? Maybe, by doing a competent job on the other issues, he might actually gain some political capital for your cause. Instead, you get someone like Babette who isn't out front on health care or redistricting, and you lose well being and political power.

Ironically, Sestak has lost tons of former supporters through his disloyalty. But, that betrayal was in the opposite direction. As you can see, it's biting him in the ass because he can't retain good people.

I'm sorry you hold such little regard (0.00 / 0)
for loyalty.  In politics and governance it is everything however.

Congressman Sestak's staffers, past and present, continue holding him in high regard.  Few have anything negative to say about their experience with him.  Yes, he works them hard but no harder than  he works himself.  The man works on four hours of sleep a night for heaven's sake.  The bottom line:  almost all of his former staffers remain loyal.

Sestak's staffers (0.00 / 0)
As an active union member I worked as a volunteer for every Democratic presidential candidate from Jack Kennedy to Jimmie Carter and never got a dime for work that I was glad to contribute. The only exception was the McGovern campaign where I was assigned to the press plane on his east coast campaign tour as a reporter/photographer for the labor press...and my union footed that bill.
One might also want to remember that many staff people serve in a campaign with the hope that it may lead to a well-paying job...which it often does.
